How Your IT Department Learned About Outsourcing
Submitted by Dan Ackerson on Sun, 08/31/2008 - 09:12They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks and this adage applies doubly to system administrators. After all, you pay these same people to protect your data and systems with tooth and claw, right? The problem is that sometimes they protect it too well. Ever needed quick access to data in order to make an informed business decision just to be told someone is on vacation or that particular system is down for maintenance until the end of the week? Are you still collaborating with remote teams via MS Excel? Have these added layers of security gotten in the way of your company's ability to grow and react to the customers' needs?
Who Else Wants to Understand Cloud Computing?
Submitted by Matthias Marschall on Thu, 08/21/2008 - 21:33Evaluating hosting scenarios for our Ruby on Rails based web application, I finally had a good reason to dig deeper into "cloud computing". While I was already watching the evolution of Amazon's web services like S3 and EC2, a lot of offerings nowadays labelled as "cloud computing" were quite new to me. To better understand the range of offerings (and which ones might be suitable for hosting an application like ours), I tried to find a suitable categorization of cloud computing. What are the differences in all the offerings? What problems do they try to solve and how do they fit into my requirements for hosting our Ruby on Rails web application in a cloud?
